Shri Yantra: The King of All Yantras
Shri Yantra is revered as the king of all yantras. It is said to bring both material and spiritual prosperity into one’s life. According to the scriptures, "Shri Sundari Sadhana Tatparanam, Bhogashcha Mokshashcha Karastha Eva..."—through the worship of Shri Vidya, a seeker can attain both worldly pleasures and liberation.
The Shri Yantra comprises nine interlocking triangles. At its very centre lies a Bindu (point), symbolising the ultimate source of creation. Because of this central point, the Divine Mother Tripura Sundari is also known as Vaindhavyavasini (Vindhyavasini).
These nine triangles represent the unity and balance between male (Purusha) and female (Shakti) energies. The central Bindu symbolises pure consciousness.
The yantra is made up of five primary geometrical shapes:
-
Square
-
Triangle
-
Circle
-
Point (Bindu)
-
Lotus petals
In Shri Yantra:
-
There are 9 interlocking triangles,
-
A central Bindu,
-
2 circles,
-
Lotus petals arranged in layers,
-
And an enclosing square (Bhupura).
These elements come together to create a highly sophisticated geometric pattern known to grant Dharma (righteousness), Artha (wealth), Kama (desires), and Moksha (liberation).
The Nine Layers (Avaranas) of Shri Yantra:
-
Trailokya Mohana Chakra – Enchants all three worlds.
-
Sarvashapooraka Chakra – Fulfils all desires and hopes.
-
Sarva Sankshobhana Chakra – Has the power to shake the entire universe.
-
Sarva Saubhagya Dayaka Chakra – Grants good fortune and auspiciousness.
-
Sarvartha Siddhi Prada Chakra – Grants success in all undertakings.
-
Sarva Rakshakara Chakra – Offers protection from all dangers.
-
Sarva Rogahara Chakra – Heals all diseases and ailments.
-
Sarva Siddhi Prada Chakra – Grants all types of accomplishments and powers.
-
Sarvanandamaya Chakra – Bestows ultimate bliss and liberation.
Bhupura (Trailokya Mohana Chakra)
The outermost layer is called Bhupura, symbolising base human emotions like anger, fear, and material desires. It consists of a square with four gates representing the four cardinal directions, each linked to one of the elements:
-
East – Air
-
South – Fire
-
West – Water
-
North – Earth
These gates symbolise access to wholeness, unity, and spiritual completeness. Beyond this square lie three concentric circles, representing past, present, and future, surrounded by two layers of lotus petals.
Shodasha Dal (Sarvashapooraka Chakra)
The first inner lotus has sixteen petals, symbolising the fulfilment of all desires. These petals are grouped into three categories:
-
Ten petals correspond to the organs of perception and action (tongue, nose, mouth, eyes, ears, skin, hands, feet, genitals, etc.).
-
Five petals relate to the five elements—water, air, earth, fire, and space.
-
The sixteenth petal connects the first two categories, providing interpretation and integration.
This layer encourages awareness of sensory experiences and our engagement with them.
Ashta Dal (Sarva Sankshobhana Chakra)
The second lotus layer has eight petals, representing human activities such as speech, motion, stimulation, aversion, attachment, elimination, balance, and attraction. At this level, one is invited to observe and become conscious of these subtle activities.
Triangular Mandala (Sarva Saubhagya Dayaka Chakra)
As previously mentioned, nine interlocking triangles signify the interplay of male and female energies.
-
Upward triangles = Shiva (masculine)
-
Downward triangles = Shakti (feminine)
Together they form 43 smaller triangles, each symbolizing a unique aspect or energy. These are arranged in four concentric circles and one central triangle. The directional reading begins from the southernmost triangle, proceeding counterclockwise—honoring both the flow of energy and the concept of duality.
